Armadillidium C.f. Pallasii "Croatian Giant"
Armadillidium C.f. Pallasii "Croatian Giant" isopods for sale!
The naming of this pod can be a bit confusing. Frontisotre is the name for an already identified species; Armadillidium Pallasii. The “CF” in this species is saying that this is NOT that species, just very similar to it and it is the closest experts have been able to currently identify it. It is similar in size as the other Frontisotre in collections, but is wider across the middle. This locale is collected in Croatia and is one of the largest of the armadillidium species, reaching up to a full inch when full grown! With their size, comes a large appetite. These guys are quite the eaters and do like to have a protein source offered often. They are covered in a slightly bumpy texture on top of their dark coloration. Babies start out as a lighter color but darken as they grow. This isopod has gained popularity as a feeder due to their size and quick reproduction rates.
Origin: Croatia
Humidity: Arid to semi-arid
Ventilation: Moderate (See our ventilation guide in the isopod care sheet under the "Care Sheets" tab.
Housing and Care: You can start a 10 count of these in a 6 quart shoe box or equivalent, but you may want to consider starting them in a slightly larger bin just because of their sheer adult size. Provide a moisture gradient of about 30% moist and 70 % dry. Use sphagnum moss of one end of the enclosure to help retain moisture between spraying (frequency of spraying will depend on amount of ventilation you provide and atmospheric conditions, just as long as the moss is always kept moist. Aim to spray down the sizes and make sure the water is reaching the bottom layer to make it last longer), a couple inches of substrate is sufficient, add a sufficient amount of leaf litter, a hide such as cork bark or edible hardwood bark or both, a calcium source such as a cuttlefish bone, but is especially appreciated by this species, eggshell or calcium powder is a healthy addition for all isopod species. You can supplementally feed them once a week with a small piece of sweet potato, carrot or squash and a protein source such as our own Bug Buffet Haus Blend, fish flakes, freeze dried shrimp/minnows or other commercialized isopod diet (small enough amount that they can consume it within 2 days to help minimize mites and mold.
