Armadillidium depressum
Armadillidium depressum isopods for sale!
Native to Brittain. Armadillidium depressum is a large species, reaching up to 20mm long and are characterized by their splayed appearance. They have a dark gray to black base color and can be flecked with three rows of yellow to white spots/patches. They do roll up into a ball but don't close all the way. They reproduce at a moderate rate once established. They enjoy warmer temperatures and a moisture gradient, but like to be kept on the slightly drier side as they may have issues molting in conditions that are too wet.
Origin: Brittain
Humidity: Semi-arid
Ventilation: Moderate (See our ventilation guide in the isopod care sheet under the "Care Sheets" tab.
Housing and Care: You can start a 10 count of these in a 6 quart shoe box or similar but you may want to consider starting them in a bit of a larger bin to start due to their large adult size so they won't need to be rehoused as quickly. Provide a moisture gradient of about 30% moist and 70% dry. Use sphagnum moss of one end of the enclosure to help retain moisture between spraying (frequency of spraying will depend on amount of ventilation you provide and atmospheric conditions, just as long as the moss is always kept moist. Aim to spray down the sizes and make sure the water is reaching the bottom layer to make it last longer), about 3"+ of substrate for them to burrow in, add a good amount of leaf litter, a hide such as cork bark or edible hardwood bark or both, a calcium source such as a cuttlefish bone, eggshell or calcium powder is a healthy addition for all isopod species. You can supplementally feed them once a week with a small piece of sweet potato, carrot or squash and a protein source such as our own Bug Buffet Haus Blend, fish flakes, freeze dried shrimp/minnows or other commercialized isopod diet (small enough amount that they can consume it within 2 days to help minimize mites and mold.
