This is the most common species of springtail available and are a great clean up crew for enclosed terrariums and moist/humid bioactive enclosures. They are asexual or parthenogenic, meaning they are all capable of reproducing without the need to mate with a male. They do not tolerate arid or even semi-arid environments and need to be kept moist.
You can culture this species on soil, clay or charcoal and seem to thrive in all of these medias.
We also offer established master cultures that are in an 8 oz. deli cup and have been active for 2+ months. They will have AT LEAST 300+ springtails and will include all life stages, from eggs to senior adults and will be a long lasting culture for you with proper care. This will come with a pipette for watering and a small sample our Bug Buffet Haus Blend to feed the springtails.
If you chose springtails only, the springtails will be packed in a temporary 2 oz flip top container that is lined with calcium springtail clay. This will be a sufficient container for them to live in for a short time (about a couple weeks or so) if you won’t be adding them directly to your own container or a bioactive enclosure right away. Just keep them moist with a drop or two of water. Simply tap them from the clay into the enclosure when you're ready to add them.
You also have the option to upgrade to an 8oz. clay master culture kit and we will ship them in that container if you choose this option. This is a great size to start your long-time master culture and is sufficient for them to live in for many months to even a year or more to come.
*The kit will come with a small sample of homemade food and a pipette to help water your culture. You will want to keep the clay moist, but not too wet. A couple drops in your culture every week is plenty.
*The clay will eventually break down as the population grows, so you will need to either purchase some springtail clay and a larger container to make your own, or you can purchase another empty 8oz kit that is already coated with clay from us and split your culture. Those can be found on our "starter kits" tab.
If you choose charcoal as your choice of media, you will receive a 6 oz clear flip top deli cup with all-natural lump charcoal inside of it. Your springtails will be packed separately in a small 2 oz flip top container lined with clay to keep them safe during shipping. You will just need to add a small amount of (preferably) distilled or RO water to the bottom (about a ¼” and maintain that level at all times) and then tap your springtails into the charcoal. Your springtails will be able to live in this container until their population grows.
